BEAUFORT, S.C. – Academic Magnet swept the Battery Creek Dolphins in straight sets in the season opener at the Palace Tuesday night.
Laiani McCullough led the offensive attack for the Dolphins notching a team-high six aces, two kills while picking up 11 assists. Caroline Malphrus recorded a team-high five kills, along with five digs and two aces.
Early in the opening frame, the Raptors took control, forcing Creek to take its first time out at the 10-4. Battery Creek rattled off three consecutive points before Academic Magnet rallied for seven straight. Following another short burst from the Dolphins, AMHS ran off with the first set 25-11.
Battery Creek had a more aggressive start in the second set, hold the lead until the Raptors tied it at 7. After a short lead for AMHS, No. 11 recorded four straight aces to give the Dolphins the lead at 15-14. However, the momentum was halted by the Raptors strong attack as Academic Magnet stretched its lead to as large as five with the score 24-19. A offensive miscue gave the Raptors a 2-0 lead.
Stanza three saw both teams exchanging points early on. Back-to-back aces from Battery Creek’s no. 9 gave the Dolphins the 9-7 advantage, forcing the Raptors to take its first timeout of the match. A flurry of points put the set back at a tie, but AMHS rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 19-12 lead, causing coach Terri McCullough to call a timeout. The Dolphins were able to score just three more points before Academic Magnet finished with an ace to collect its first win of the season.
Battery Creek returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Hanahan High School. First serve set for 6:30 p.m.
